May is Asthma Awareness Month

Each year, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America declares May as National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month. The timing is appropriate, as May is the peak season for both asthma and allergy flair-ups, and when the largest number of children and adults are diagnosed with seasonal allergies and asthma.

There are over 300 million people diagnosed and living with asthma world wide today. Asthma symptoms can range from a shortness of breath when exercising to full blown asthma attacks triggered by environmental factors. Regardless of the type or severity of asthma, it is a major problem impacting the lives of as many as 26 million people inside the United States.

Successful asthma management includes:

  • Proper diagnosis
  • Understanding the warning signs of an attack
  • Avoiding attack triggers
  • Following your healthcare providers treatment plans

Please take some time this month to educate yourself on the warning signs, symptoms and ways to avoid asthma attacks in affected people. Atlanta ENT will be featuring a series of blog posts over the next week discussing frequently asked questions, potential treatments for the disease and information particularly important to those that live or work with children or adults with asthma.
