A recent study in the journal Respiratory Medicine, found that adding a routine supplement of omega-3 may have far reaching impact on the improvement of lung function in asthma sufferers. The study was written by Timothy Mickleborough, a professor from the Indiana University School of Public Health.
The study included 20 men and women between the ages of 20 and 24 that had asthma, but did not take daily medication. All of the participants used a rescue inhaler to treat symptoms. Half of the group was given an omega-3 supplement for three weeks, while the other half received a placebo.
After the completion of the study, Mickleborough found that the group taking the omega-3 supplement had a 59 percent increase in lung function, tested by a breath test.
“Not only does the supplement reduce symptoms, which will make you feel better, but it potentially could improve athletic performance,” Mickleborough said in a statement. “Any time you can reduce medication is good.”
Omega-3 has also been shown to reduce plaque build-up in the arteries, improve cholesterol, help joint, bone and mental health and prevent cancer. All in all, this study is just one more reason why you should include an omega-3 supplement in your daily vitamin routine.
