Snoring and Sleep Apnea

The Tritt Breathe and Sleep Center's mission is to help each person to breathe and sleep better. We strive to create a pleasant experience and environment for all of our patients. Our Center provides patients with a one-stop comprehensive medical facility to evaluate and treat their breathing and sleep concerns. Our team of physicians specializing in sleep medicine, pulmonology, ENT, allergy and asthma combine extensive professional expertise and quality service to provide a unique environment in which breathing and sleep conditions are evaluated and treated.

Since most people spend about one-third of their lives asleep, it is easy to see how important getting a good night's rest is to your physical and mental well-being. There are many potential contributing factors involved in sleep problems, including sinusitis, allergies, asthma, emphysema, environmental and lifestyle factors, and various breathing and sleep disorders.

There are nearly 85 known sleep disorders affecting 20% of Americans. Everyone at one time has experienced snoring, trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or has been sleepy during the day. People with sleep disorders experience these and other serious symptoms frequently.

At Tritt Breathe and Sleep Center, we treat the following disorders and conditions:

Breathing Disorders
Our doctors can treat several breathing disorders, including asthma and allergic rhinitis. Asthma, a chronic inflammatory disease of the airway, is one of the most common breathing disorders in the United States. People living with asthma suffer from wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath and chest tightness. Allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever, is characterized by sneezing, congestion and red, watery eyes. Our doctors can help relieve your asthma or hay fever symptoms through a balance of medication and lifestyle changes. Learn more about breathing disorder treatment.

Snoring
Snoring is caused by vibration of tissue in your nose, mouth and back of your throat. Most snoring is caused by movement of the soft palate, or the soft part of the roof of the mouth, though other contributing causes may include nasal blockage, alcohol consumption, sleeping on your back or being overweight. If you snore, both you and your bed partner may lose sleep and feel less rested. Some lifestyle changes can improve snoring, but our doctors offer a full range of treatment options, including the Pillar Procedure, where three small implants are inserted in your soft palate to stiffen the tissue and reduce vibration. Find out more about all our snoring treatments.

Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a serious disorder causing a person to stop breathing or experience shallow breathing during sleep. Symptoms may include snoring, excessive daytime sleepiness, or waking up gasping for air. Sleep apnea has two main causes: either a blockage of the airway from loose or excess throat tissue or a temporary disconnect between the brain and the muscles used to breathe. Diagnosis usually requires participation in a sleep study, and a variety of treatment options are available, including medication, oral appliances, breathing masks or various surgeries to widen the airway. Find out how our board certified physicians can help to treat your sleep apnea.

Insomnia
The inability to fall asleep or remain asleep is known as insomnia. There are dozens of reasons why people have trouble sleeping, including stress, poor sleep or diet habits or shifting work schedules. Over one in three Americans experience occasional insomnia and recent research suggests that chronic insomnia brought on by underlying physical and mental disorders may affect as many as one in ten. Our surgeons have several treatment options available to them, ranging from behavior management to relaxation and light therapy to prescription and over-the-counter medications. Restless Legs Syndrome
Restless Legs Syndrome, or RLS, is a painful tingling or wriggling sensation that occurs while lying down or sitting for an extended period of time. People living with RLS have an irresistible urge to move their legs when the symptoms occur. RLS may be caused by such factors as heredity, chronic disease, anemia or overconsumption of caffeine. Currently, there is no test that accurately diagnoses RLS. Lifestyle changes such as exercising and reducing caffeine intake may provide some relief, but our doctors also can prescribe medications to control symptoms or use electrical stimulation on the legs in more severe cases. Learn more about this increasingly common condition.

Excessive Sleepiness
Patients suffering from Excessive Daytime Sleepiness, or EDS, find it very difficult to stay awake during the day. The feeling of constant tiredness can lead to memory and concentration problems and reduced productivity. The first step in EDS treatment is for one of our physicians to determine what is causing your tired feeling. Almost all sleep disorders might lead to EDS, making diagnosis by a sleep specialist that much more important. Medication, change in sleep schedules or relaxation therapies are all available to help resolve EDS. Find out how the sleep disorder specialists at Tritt Breathe and Sleep can help you.
