Allergies and Sleep Complaints- Atlanta ENT

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, or AAFA, and Teva Respiratory recently conducted a survey of adults over the age of 18 that were diagnosed with nasal allergies.

The survey showed that 59 percent of allergy sufferers with nasal related symptoms experienced sleep issues due to nasal congestion, drainage or sneezing, yet only 35 percent of those actively treated their allergy symptoms. Nearly have of those that responded said that their allergy symptoms keep their partner from getting a solid night’s rest, as well.

The lack of sleep or interrupted sleep cycles caused additional problems for those surveyed. Complaints included:

  • 57 percent said they had difficulty concentrating at work
  • 61 percent said they did not get to enjoy the outdoors with their families due to allergy symptoms
  • 71 percent said they typically only treat allergy symptoms after a flair up.

If we can take away anything from this study, it is the fact that being pro-active in diagnosing and properly treating allergy symptoms is essential to the quality of life of both the allergy sufferer and his or her family. If you are struggling with allergies, call Atlanta ENT for a consultation today.
