Fall Allergies are Already Causing Problems in Atlanta

Anyone who has allergies knows that the fall season is one of the worst. As ragweed pollen litters the air, the runny nose, itchy eyes and other symptoms that go along with allergic reactions kick up full force. We are only just over a week into the autumn season, and already these allergies are causing problems. Here’s a look at why this year is going to be rough for fall allergies, and what you can do to keep those pesky reactions at bay.

Fall Allergy Season in Atlanta

The fall season from mid-September through late October is a really rough season for those who suffer from fall allergies in Atlanta. Ragweed and mold tend to run rampant this time of year and get airborne. There are a lot of people who have allergies only this time of year, because the specific pollens that are in the air during the autumn.

Why This Season is Bad for Georgians

This season promises to be a bad one for those with allergies. The summer was a hot and humid one, creating conditions that are prime for the growth and thriving of the ragweed and mold pollens that are the key factors in fall allergies. For those that have both allergies and other conditions like asthma, this could be a bad combination.

Doctors are warning people that if you are prone to allergies in the fall, take action early to keep the symptoms at bay.

What You Can Do

For many who suffer from allergy symptoms, over the counter medications can hold them off. If you take these meds for two or three days, however, and your symptoms don’t abate, you may want to go see your Atlanta ENT doctor for more serious options. These include prescription medication or rush immunology treatments, where injections containing small amounts of allergens teach your body to better tolerate these substances. A doctor can also run tests to determine the exact nature of your allergies. This can help with treatment.

Avoiding Ragweed and Other Allergens

Of course, the best way to avoid allergies is to avoid allergens. Stay indoors as much as possible during allergy season with the windows closed and the air conditioner running. Shower frequently to keep your body clean and clear of pollen and spores. If you are normally a “hang them to dry” person, this may be the time you want to use a clothes dryer after doing laundry.

Wear a face mask when you clear your yard and gutters of decaying leaves and debris. Finally, if you do have to go out, when you turn on the AC in your car, open the windows a few minutes to allow any spores in the vehicle to disperse.
