Don’t Let Your Children’s Hearing be at Risk from Holiday Tech Gifts
Did your child get a new electronic device for the holidays this year? If so, chances are they have a pair of headphones or ear buds seemingly permanently attached to their heads. While this may need some much-needed post-holiday quiet for parents, it could mean hearing loss for your kids if they don’t turn the volume down. 50 percent volume is a good rule of thumb, and its up to parents to check regularly that the volume is at a safe level.
The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association has reported a 31 percent increase in hearing loss today in teens today versus their parents’ generation, and I am sure we can all remember how loud we listened to our music as teens!
Most importantly, parents need to know the warning signs of hearing loss in children and teens:
- Ear pain after listening to loud sounds
- Lack of attention when spoken to (more so than your typical teenager ignoring their parents!)
- Turning the volume on the TV up
- Challenges at school, especially in reading and math
- In young children, delays in speech development
If you suspect your child may have hearing loss, make an appointment with an audiologist today.
