Sleep Apnea- Atlanta ENT

Sleep apnea is one of those rare conditions that is massively misunderstood by the general public, which makes it hard to convince people that they genuinely suffer from it. For example, many are under the impression that the primary danger of sleep apnea is the cessation of breathing, and that sufferers will literally suffocate to death while sleeping.

In reality, sleep apnea is far more insidious than that, causing a significant increase in the likelihood of heart-related symptoms and conditions because the body can’t sufficiently relax to a state of rest when it is constantly being deprived of oxygen.

Couple that with the uncomfortable treatment – having to wear a sleep mask every night – and proper sleep apnea treatment is a hard sell.

However, the sheer amount of relief that patients experience when they finally agree to use a CPAP (Continuous Positive Air Pressure) machine is astounding. After an adjustment period ranging from several days to several weeks, CPAP users find themselves able to breathe more freely and comfortably than they may have ever been able to before in their lives. It can literally be the difference between night and day!

Many simply make do by using store-bought “snore strips” which pull the nose open, ostensibly opening air passages. While these strips might be effective against snoring for some, they are absolutely not an effective treatment for sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is too dangerous a condition to trust do-it-yourself cures; treat yourself to the best night of sleep you’ve ever had, and see your ENT specialist about a CPAP machine or other treatment options if you are unable to tolerate a CPAP machine!
