Is It a Sinus Infection or Just Lingering Congestion?

A stuffy nose can be frustrating, especially when it seems to stick around long after you expected to feel better. But does lingering congestion mean you have a sinus infection?

Not necessarily.

Congestion can happen for several reasons, including allergies, irritation, inflammation, or a viral illness. Knowing what may be behind your symptoms can help you understand when it may be time to have them evaluated.

When Congestion May Be Temporary

Nasal congestion is common with colds, seasonal allergies, and other upper respiratory illnesses. You may also experience a runny nose, postnasal drip, sneezing, or a feeling of pressure in your face.

In many cases, these symptoms gradually improve as the underlying irritation or illness settles down.

However, congestion that keeps coming back or never seems to fully clear may have another cause.

Signs It May Be More Than Lingering Congestion

A sinus infection can involve symptoms such as facial pressure or pain, nasal congestion, drainage, and difficulty breathing through the nose.

It can sometimes be difficult to tell the difference between a sinus infection and other causes of nasal symptoms based on congestion alone. That is why persistent or recurring symptoms deserve attention, particularly if they are interfering with sleep, breathing, or everyday activities.

Other conditions, such as chronic rhinitis, allergies, or nasal obstruction, can also contribute to ongoing congestion.

When Should You See an ENT?

If your nose feels blocked frequently, your congestion keeps returning, or you are having trouble breathing comfortably through your nose, an ENT evaluation can help identify what may be contributing to the problem.

Depending on the cause, treatment may involve addressing allergies or inflammation, managing chronic rhinitis, or evaluating structural issues that may be affecting nasal airflow.

The goal is not simply to treat the congestion—it is to understand why it keeps happening.

Don't Ignore Congestion That Won't Go Away

A stuffy nose that lingers can be easy to dismiss, especially when you are used to dealing with seasonal allergies or recurring congestion. But if nasal symptoms are becoming a regular part of your life, it may be worth finding out what is actually causing them.

If you are dealing with persistent nasal congestion, facial pressure, drainage, or difficulty breathing through your nose, Atlanta ENT, Sinus & Allergy Associates, P.C. can evaluate your symptoms and discuss appropriate treatment options. To schedule an appointment, call 404-891-6576.
